Under wide open throttle, when you'd most likely see detonation, the EGR would be closed. If it was stuck open, you'd have a cooler combustion but you'd lose some power. If it was stuck closed, you'd see no difference during WOT since it's supposed to be closed then anyway. I'm thinking they meant detonation at highway cruising speeds, when the mixture is leaner and the lack of a functioning EGR would make the combustion hotter.
